Learn about Stadio Olimpico's glorious past, starting from the inauguration in 1953

Stadio Olimpico, located in Rome, Italy, is one of the country’s most iconic and historic sports venues. Originally opened in 1937, the stadium has undergone several renovations, the most significant being for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, which transformed it into a modern facility with a seating capacity of over 70,000. The stadium is part of the Foro Italico sports complex and serves as the home ground for both Lazio and Roma, two of Italy’s most storied football clubs. Its design, featuring a striking elliptical shape and a roof supported by tensioned cables, makes it a distinctive landmark in Rome.

In addition to football, Stadio Olimpico has hosted numerous other major sporting events and concerts. It was the main venue for the 1960 Summer Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events. The stadium has also been a central location for rugby, serving as the home venue for the Italian national rugby team during the Six Nations Championship. Over the years, it has witnessed unforgettable moments in sports history and has been a stage for world-renowned artists, further cementing its status as a cultural and sporting hub in Italy.
